WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The No. 4 Nova Southeastern women's basketball team held off a pesky Palm Beach Atlantic squad on Saturday afternoon, winning 77-64 at the Rubin Arena.
The Sharks (12-0) led by eight at the half and started out the second by scoring the first eight points, including back-to-back 3-pointers from
Danielle Robinson (Jr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.). They pushed the lead to 19, 56-37, with 13:27 left.
PBA (7-12) scored the next 10 to push it back down to single digits, 56-47, at the 10:35 mark. It was still nine just under a minute later, before the Sharks had an 11-4 run to create some breathing room.
Taylor Buie (So. Puyallup, Wash.) and
Alexis Murphy (So., Carlisle, Ohio) each had two straight layups during the stretch.
Though the lead was back up to 16 with 6:53 to go (67-51), again the Sailfish would quickly again get it under 10. This time they scored nine of the next 10 to make it a 68-60 game (3:49).
Amanda Burakoski (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit a big 3-pointer on the very next possession, with 2:59 left, to stop the home team's momentum. NSU made 4-of-4 free throws in the final 32 seconds to provide the final margin.
Burakoski led the Sharks with 18 points, and was 4-of-8 from behind the arc. Buie had 17 and
Jasmine Wilkins (Sr., Miami) 16, with 13 coming before the break. She had a season-high three blocked shots, and her nine rebounds tied for the team lead with Robinson, who also had nine points.
Jessica Russi (Sr., Lake Mary, Fla.) chipped in with six points, six rebounds and nine assists.
NSU and PBA had the same exact shooting lines, 24-of-59 for 40.7 percent, but the Sharks made six more 3-pointers (nine to three) and seven more free throws (20 to 13). Each team also had 37 rebounds. The Sharks forced 19 PBA turnovers, and outscored the Sailfish on points off turnovers, 27-17.
Kasie Parker led the Sailfish with 26 points, but it came on 9-of-24 shooting. Jaz Green added 16 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
The Sharks return home to the NSU Arena for the first time in nearly a month on Wednesday, Jan. 15, hosting border rival Barry at 5:30 p.m.
